Tokyo, April 5, 2013 – One of Japan's favorite manga characters today joined the Tokyo 2020 team. Doraemon, a cat-shaped robot from the 22nd century, is the first special ambassador of Tokyo's bid for the hosting the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The character of Doraemon, who was the first manga character to be appointed ambassador by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2008, embodies Japan's values of respect and friendship, which are all Olympic values. Created in 1969, The Adventures of Doraemon has 1.344 episodes. Still very popular today, Doraemon was the only fictional character to appear in the list of 22 heroes of Asia published by Time Asia magazine in April 2002.
Masato Mizuno, Tokyo 2020 CEO and Vice President of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC), said: “The global popularity of Japanese manga such as Doraemon is a reminder of how Japanese culture inspires young people. This reinforces our promise to deliver a huge celebration that will reinforce the Olympic Values and encourage young people to pursue their dreams through sport. We are delighted to have Doraemon, a resourceful friend, on our team. »
