A billion-dollar Women's World Cup

Football

Australia is rubbing its hands: hosting the 2023 Women's Football World Cup, co-organized with New Zealand, was a good deal. According to a study unveiled by the Australian Football Federation (FA), the global tournament would be the first in history to achieve profitability. Its economic impact is estimated at A$1,32 billion (US$865,9 million) in Australia alone. More than 1,7 million tickets were sold, surpassing the record 1,35 million tickets set in 2015. Australia's semi-final loss to England was televised the most watched in the country since the implementation of the current audience evaluation system in 2001. There is therefore no question of stopping along the way. FA chief executive James Johnson has confirmed the federation's desire to secure the hosting of the 2026 Women's Asian Cup, a competition for which Australia would be the last country in contention. A decision could be announced next April at the latest.
