The African Champions League falls further behind

Football

New delay for the African Champions League. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided, Thursday, September 10, to postpone the semi-finals and final of the competition for another three weeks. The cause is a new spike in coronavirus cases and new travel restrictions in Morocco, a country which has two of the four teams in the last four. The first legs of the semi-finals will now be played on October 17 and 18, 2020, with the return matches postponed to October 23 and 24. The final should normally be played on November 6. CAF also postponed the semi-finals and final of its other club competition, the Confederation Cup, which were supposed to take place in Morocco. Both tournaments should have ended last May, but were delayed due to the pandemic. For the Champions League, the choice of host city for the final will depend on the qualified teams. If the two Moroccan clubs reach the final, it will take place in Morocco. In the event that the other two teams, both Egyptian, win their ticket, the final would be held in Egypt. “ But if we have a Moroccan team and another Egyptian team, we will carry out a transparent vote for the choice of the venue of the final”, explained Ahmad Ahmad, president of CAF.
